Why?
For his steadfastness in the face of ten years of tedious imprisonment.
For his willingness to be moved by God and as such to renounce his former, sinful life.
For his serenity in the face of certain death (sentenced to death for attempting to leave England, he expected each day of his imprisonment to be his last, never knowing that the Queen had not signed his death warrant.)
